Géricault’s The Raft of the Medusa portrays shipwreck survivors adrift at sea, capturing the instant when despair gives way to hope. He organized the composition around two overlapping triangles—the left filled with the dead and dying, the right surging upward toward the man waving for rescue. The diagonal ascent from prone to reaching figures creates momentum and emotional climax. Overlapping forms, opposing diagonals, and interlocking gestures unify the composition while balancing tension. Dark storm clouds and waves contrast with the bright horizon where the rescue ship appears, the stark light and shadow reflecting the painting’s oscillation between hope and despair. The tangled bodies further convey turbulence and the human struggle against nature’s power.
