FAQs
Is UntitledDb free to use, or do I need to pay to be listed?
UntitledDb is absolutely free to join and use! Our Standard plan is free for everyone and allows you to create an account, browse the entire art database, and even contribute information. You do not have to pay to have a profile on UntitledDb – we believe in being an inclusive, collaborative platform where every artist, curator, and gallery can participate. Paid subscriptions (Pro and Enterprise) are optional upgrades that provide extra features, but being listed and visible on UntitledDb will always be free. In short, anyone can be part of UntitledDb without spending any money, and your profile can be seen by all users regardless of your plan.
What does the free Standard plan include? Will I miss out by not upgrading?
The free Standard plan is quite robust. As a Standard (free) user, you can explore UntitledDb’s extensive catalog of artists, exhibitions, and institutions. You can create your own user profile, build and customize a watchlist of your favorite artists, shows, galleries, and more, and maintain your personal exhibition calendar. You can even add new entries to the database or suggest edits to existing information – this is part of UntitledDb’s collaborative nature. Essentially, free users get full access to view and contribute to the community-driven database. Upgrading to Pro or Enterprise simply adds additional tools on top of this foundation; it’s there to enhance your experience if you need those extras, but it’s not required for being an active, visible part of the community.
What extra benefits do Pro and Enterprise subscriptions offer?
Upgrading to a Pro or Enterprise plan unlocks powerful features for those who want more control and insights, while still keeping the platform inclusive for everyone. Here’s a quick comparison:
- Standard (Free): Create an account and user profile, browse all content, contribute new entries or edits to the catalog, curate a personal watchlist, maintain an exhibition calendar, and get basic dashboard analytics (simple stats on your content). This plan lets you participate in the community and get tailored art recommendations at no cost.
- Pro ($10/month): Everything in Standard, plus the ability to claim your personal profile (for example, an artist can claim their own page in the database). Claiming your profile verifies you as the owner and lets you restrict community edits on that profile – in other words, you gain exclusive control over the info on your page. You also get access to advanced tools and analytics, such as detailed engagement stats (so you can see how many people viewed your profile or artwork, and other insights). Pro is ideal for individuals who want to manage their professional presence and understand their audience better.
- Enterprise ($100*/month):
Everything in Pro, plus tools made for galleries and institutions. With Enterprise, you can claim your institution’s profile page on UntitledDb and manage it directly. You can also claim and manage multiple profiles for the artists, curators, or writers your institution represents. Like with Pro, claimed profiles can restrict community edits, meaning your gallery’s information stays authoritative and is only updated by you or your team. Enterprise subscribers also get the full suite of analytics to track engagement across all those profiles.
* An Enterprise account includes one institution profile and one person profile claim (for example, a gallery plus one artist). If you need to claim additional profiles beyond that, you can add them for a small extra fee per profile each month – this way a single Enterprise subscription can scale to fit a larger roster.
What does it mean to “claim” my profile? Do I lose control if I stay on the free plan?
“Claiming” your profile means verifying that you are the person (or institution) the profile represents, giving you direct control over that profile’s content. On UntitledDb’s free plan, all artist and institution profiles are part of the collaborative database – this means other users can contribute information to those profiles (for example, adding an exhibition you participated in). This community editing is great for keeping information up-to-date, but we understand it can raise concerns about accuracy or control.
If you stay on the free plan, you don’t lose your profile – it’s still there – but it remains open to community edits to help enrich the info. By upgrading to Pro (for individuals) or Enterprise (for institutions), you can officially claim your profile, which locks down editing rights to you. In practice, that means once you’ve claimed it, no one else can change your bio, artworks, or other details without your approval. Our community is generally respectful and our team monitors edits for accuracy, so an unclaimed profile isn’t a wild free-for-all. However, claiming gives you that extra layer of control and verification if you want it, ensuring your presence on UntitledDb reflects exactly what you want it to.
Does a Pro subscription make my profile more visible?
Every profile on UntitledDb, whether free or paid, is visible to the public and searchable by all users. We don’t hide or down-rank free profiles – our mission is to unite the art community, not create paywalled silos.
That said, a Pro subscription can indirectly improve your visibility in a few ways. For one, a claimed profile signals to viewers that the information is verified and maintained by you, which can make your page more trustworthy and engaging to browse. Also, with Pro’s analytics, you can learn what content attracts the most attention and optimize your profile accordingly (for example, if you see a lot of interest in certain artworks, you can add more details or images for those). Pro users tend to be more active in updating their pages since they have extra tools, and active profiles naturally garner more attention. However, there are no “pay-to-win” boosts – a free user who keeps their profile up-to-date and contributes quality content can be just as visible as a Pro user. We ensure that search results and discovery features treat everyone fairly. Upgrading is about giving you more data and control, not about unlocking a secret promotion button.
I’m a gallery/foundation – how can the Enterprise plan help me, and is it worth the cost?
The Enterprise plan is designed with galleries, foundations, and other art institutions in mind. If you’re managing multiple artists or curators, Enterprise lets you bring all those profiles under one roof. With one subscription, you can claim your gallery’s profile page and the profiles of the artists or curators you represent. Your team can then update bios, artworks, exhibition histories, and other details for all those profiles directly, without waiting on community edits. It’s a convenient way to ensure all information about your organization and your artists is accurate and up-to-date across the platform.
Your institution’s profile, as well as those of the artists and/or curators you manage, will have a “claimed” badge, showing viewers that the profile is official and maintained by you. Plus, the analytics suite helps you see interest and engagement across all your claims in one place. Regarding cost, we keep it flexible: the base $100/month includes one institution and one person profile as part of the subscription. If you represent more people, you can add additional profiles for a modest add-on fee per profile rather than needing a separate subscription for each. We want Enterprise to scale with your needs. And remember, even with Enterprise members having special tools, the platform still welcomes contributions from everyone; your claimed profiles simply ensure that your official info stays authoritative.
How does billing work for subscriptions? Are there any hidden fees?
Billing for UntitledDb Pro and Enterprise is straightforward and transparent. Subscriptions are billed on a recurring basis (monthly by default). When you subscribe, you’ll see the price upfront – $10 per month for Pro, $100 per month for Enterprise – and there are no surprise charges beyond that. In the case of Enterprise, if you choose to claim additional profiles beyond what’s included in the base plan, those add-on fees are clearly communicated (for example, currently $7 per month for each extra artist profile, and $70 per month for each extra institution profile). We always let you know before you confirm any purchase exactly what you’ll be billed. Taxes (if applicable) are calculated separately, but we don’t tack on any random “processing” fees. In summary, what you see is what you get – a flat monthly subscription with no hidden costs.
Can I cancel or change my subscription plan? What happens if I cancel?
You can cancel your subscription or change plans at any time – we want to keep things flexible for you. If you decide to cancel, you can do it easily through your account settings (or by contacting our support team), and there’s no penalty or hassle. When you cancel, you’ll continue to enjoy your Pro or Enterprise features until the end of your current billing period (since you’ve already paid for that time). After that, your account simply reverts to the Standard free plan.
Importantly, you won’t lose your profile or any content you’ve added. For example, if you claimed your profile as a Pro user and then cancel, your profile stays on UntitledDb – it just becomes a regular community profile again once the subscription lapses. (In other words, the “claimed” status is lifted, so community members could update it again if needed.) All the information you contributed remains in the database for others to discover. You can always re-upgrade in the future if you want to regain exclusive control or other premium features. Similarly, if you want to switch from Pro to Enterprise or downgrade from Enterprise to Pro, you can do that smoothly at any point. Our system will adjust the billing so you’re only charged for the plan you’re using, pro-rated to the date of the change. We’ve made sure there are no long-term contracts – you’re never locked in, and the process is transparent and user-friendly.
If the database is collaborative, how do you ensure information is accurate and up-to-date?
UntitledDb’s collaborative nature means many eyes and hands help keep artist and exhibition information current. Think of it like a Wikipedia-style approach, but focused on the art world and with domain-specific oversight.
When a profile is unclaimed, the community’s updates help build it out and prevent it from becoming outdated. Once a profile is claimed by a Pro or Enterprise member, that person becomes the primary editor, but other users can still suggest changes, which then get reviewed by the profile's claimant. This hybrid model ensures that data doesn’t go stale – there’s always someone (either the community or the profile owner) actively caring for each entry. We also encourage artists and institutions on the free plan to check their profiles and update any important information; it’s easy to do and contributes to the overall accuracy of the database. In short, accuracy is a team effort: our platform provides the tools and oversight, the community contributes knowledge, and profile owners can take the reins if they want. This way, UntitledDb stays reliable and up-to-date, and everyone’s expertise is valued.
