We see and “understand” war primarily through images—thereby revealing the distance we have from actual wars. The closer the experience comes, the deeper it is engraved in the body, in the way we move, in how our bodies react to certain sounds, situations, and encounters.
In this artwork, Yoav Schutzer, born between the Oslo Peace Accords and the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin, i.e., between the real hope for peace and the shattering of that hope, takes a look at the experience of growing up in the shadow of ongoing war.
From here, he goes further, digging through the private photo archive of his father, Roni Schutzer, which contains over 40 years of personal and political history.
In dialogue with these testimonies, Yoav searches for traces of coming of age, identity, and trauma.
