In the summer of 2016, I travelled to Moscow to see an exhibition, where a curator from the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art told me: ‘You absolutely have to go to the Moscow Museum of Modern Art. There’s an exhibition of a performance group from Saint Petersburg that even I didn’t know about.’ Curated by Peter Belyi and Lizaveta Matveeva, The Brotherhood of New Blockheads featured a selection of around 100 performances that had taken place between 1996 and 2002. I was so enthusiastic that I brought the exhibition to the Kunsthalle Zürich in 2019. After Moscow, Zurich, and New York, it can now be seen in Berlin for the first time.


The Brotherhood of New Blockheads showed me that Russia was completely different from Europe in 1989. Milan Kundera said that 1968 stood for liberation in the West, but for oppression in the East. Similarly, you could say that 1989…
