The modern and contemporary art collection of the Casa del Mutilato in Genoa bears witness to the tragedy of wars, above all through depictions of scenes that parallel or follow the actual conflicts. Among the preserved works, examples include Soldato cieco che ascolta le memorie (“Blind Soldier Listening to Memories”) by Eugenio Baroni (on the First World War) and Il Ritorno (“The Return”) by Alessandro Berretti (on the Second World War). Memory is thus conveyed through portrayals of direct human sources, individuals who personally endured the clashes.
Not only soldiers: emerging from the dense labyrinth of lives that the building’s historic halls contain are also other figures who survived the horror—mothers. They too were dragged into a new and upended present, marked by trauma and uncertainty.
