Press Release
From Friday, March 25 to Sunday, April 3, the Church of San Marziano (Mede, PV) will host the exhibition Domenico Balbi – Casa a Casa, curated by Matteo Lenuzza.
The show centers on the Genoese artist and designer Domenico Balbi, active in the second half of the 20th century. His 1981 Annunciation is placed in dialogue with the episodes of faith historically represented in the church. The fauvist echoes characteristic of his painting—absorbed during his youthful stays in Paris—are subdued here into an intimate and suspended scene.
Unlike the explosive energy of his celebrated tarot works, Balbi presents a Madonna whose naturalness and wonder recall Lorenzo Lotto’s 1534 interpretation of the same subject. This reference is no accident: Balbi often drew heavily from the great masters of Italian art, especially in terms of compositional structure.
