Notes on Codependence

For me the power in your work comes from the consistency of your inquiry in relation to the shifting image. Uncontrollably different images are getting at a common, submerged truth. I am not bound by the first look, the world is not as it seems, and therefore my participation as a viewer is renewed. From what I understand Codependence is a proposition about source material. We can’t help but have a distorted relationship to things. There is an imbalance from which an artwork is made because you are trying to work out this distortion. It is a - or perhaps the - question inside the middle of a life. It is an origin story. The feeling or agitation of it was present in childhood. Codependence is an examination of a visualised limit, of going past balance towards obsession because that’s where images come from. It is another way of saying that you’ve lost the boundary between yourself and something, that there’s been a dissolve or overlap or fixation…
