THE FISHERMAN is the prelude to the two-part exhibition by Lulu MacDonald, which continues with THE ASTRONAUT at the Kunstverein GASTGARTEN in Hamburg. The two titles come from the book Orbital, which tells of an unlikely friendship that unfolds in the face of a typhoon – mundane and unworldly. This atmosphere of shared experience in the unknown resonates in MacDonald's series of works. In her artistic exploration, MacDonald examines the relationship between material phenomena that confront each other in the dark – alien to each other and yet related.


For the FRISE Gallery, she is developing a multimedia installation that focuses on the Rhubarb Triangle – a region in Yorkshire where rhubarb grows in complete darkness and is harvested by candlelight. The deceived rhubarb thinks autumn is spring. Not far from this scene is a former mining area.
