The erotic space that was liberated by the sexual revolution of the 1970s and which was historically driven by political radicalism and rebellion against the establishment has been hijacked by the capitalist machine. Free love has degenerated into a sexual performance with a price tag. The idealists of yore have matured into self-satisfied capitalists who have made themselves comfortable in the flaming status quo. One such mature couple can be seen in 'Sierre dans la main', where the two are surrounded by signs of wealth and live out their youth through consumption, with no concern for the masses below them. The stylized consumption culminates in the bedroom, where props and ideology become a performance of sexual desire. Julius Hofmann caricatures this intrusion of the economic machinery and digital media into the self-image through the optimization of sexual life and the pursuit of sexuality.
