The exhibition title, Conflict Entrepreneurs, refers to an individual who creates or exacerbates a conflict for their own gain, be it political, social, or racial as coined by Amanda Ripley in her text High Conflict. In addition to the term’s emphasis on entrepreneurship, conflict entrepreneurs operate in the overlapping realms of politics, media, activism as well as business. Examining strategies of control and exploitation, Hill explores connections between the manipulative tactics of conflict entrepreneurs and that of company bosses who build company towns. She mines the histories of these towns such as Steinway Village in Astoria, Queens and investigates their contemporary resurgence, specifically as demonstrated by Elon Musk’s development of Snailbrook, Texas for employees of The Boring Company and SpaceX.
